Walter, the story of a rat by Barbara Wersba

Walter, the main character in the story, is a rat that can read. He lives in the household of a writer named Amanda Pomeroy. She writes books about mice, for children, and that disturbs Walter. He doesn’t get why people never write about rats and always mice and rats are the bad guys in books and movies.
Both characters are lonely and so Walter learns how to write and writes letters to Miss Pomeroy and she writes letters to him. They become friends which is really odd for an old lady and a rat, but it solves the problem of each of them being lonely.
I recommend this book if you are like Walter and like to read. Walter is always saying phrases that he learned from books that he has read, ex:
“To be or not to be, that is the question,” which he read from a poet named Shakespeare. He named himself Walter from reading stories from Sir Walter Scott. He gets big ideas from books…just like me!!
